Paper Topic Thoughts

For my next paper in this writing class I am considering doing something about the correlation between the amount of parent involvement in their child's both academic and social lives and how that affects how they react in school. I want to know if the parents involvement in the students life will positively effect how they perform in school. When I was growing up I had a mom that was always involved in everything and I think that it helped me keep on track, but I wonder if this is accurate for all students. What is the negative effects if the parents aren't involved? But I am not exactly sure how to start, or where to go from my question.

This is a very interesting topic and it definitely needs to be discussed in one form or another. I think something that can and probably should be considered when starting on your paper is the fact that some kid's parents can't be involved for whatever reason or another, even if they wanted to. This is definitely a great topic. Good luck.

I've popped over here from Bud Hunt's blog and your question is fascinating! I too had parents who put education first and were up to date on what we were doing. Then, teaching middle school in a suburban school that was bordering a large urban center I saw a very different type of family engagement. It might be interesting to see they different types of things that the school district and teahcers have set up to reach out to parents (Open house, online grades, etc.) and then see which parents respond. Do our new technologies help bring parents in or push them further away? Good luck with the paper!

This is a great topic. I've often wanted to look into this to see what connections there are between parent involvement and student success. One idea I've meant to do as a quick, pretty unscientific study is this:

Where I teach (suburban New Jersey), our classes are tracked into four different levels--Studies, Academic, Advanced, and Honors/IB. Last year I had three honors classes and two academic classes. At back to school night, each honors class was packed with parents. In one academic class, only three parents came to meet me. It seems apparent to me that one of the reasons that those kids are in a lower-performing class is that the parents are not involved.

As a small step to answer your questions, you might be able to find a teacher that took attendance at back to school/parent night and compare that list to student performance. I've meant to do this, but in the madhouse of the beginning of the year, I always forget to keep track of what parents show up.

Hey you might want to look at the most recent post on the blog "Are we doing anything today?." It sounds like it could give you some more ideas about your paper. Perhaps it will be helpful.
